Reunion Information

USS Coontz Reunion, 2017

The USS Coontz (DLG9/DDG40) returns to the Rose Festival City of Portland, Oregon on September 14-17 .  Our reunion will be at the Hyatt House Portland Downtown. The Hotel was just opened in August 2106. It is located downtown, with easy access from the airport and to all the interesting parts of the city though a combination of Bus, Street Cars or the lite Rail system if you care to wander around on your own.  To make your reservations, you can call the Hotel directly at
(503) 242-2775 or go on their web site at

The rates negotiated for the Hotel are $149 plus tax (Down from $225).
(Not to worry, your total cost will be similar to the cost of Charleston).

The negotiated rates apply three days before and after the reunion.  There are some wonderful things to take in if you’d like to spend more time in the area. We’ll be sending you a list of things you might want to consider visiting,
Byron Anderson (FTM2, 1962-1963), and Red Bennett (FTM2, 1963-1964) have put together some interesting venues for us to enjoy. By incorporating lots interesting but inexpensive and free venues we can hold the Total Cost for the Reunion at or below the Member costs for the Charleston reunion.

They have kept all of the usual reunion activities - the Meet and Greet on Thursday in the Hospitality Room, the 2 Bell Ceremony and a River Lunch Cruise around Portland and not just one dinner, but two!  They are also trying to incorporate some Ladies events if some of the ladies prefer to go off on their own rather than explore another engine room.

One event that you will find exciting is a tour of PT 658, which is on display in Portland, including a dinner time talk about how they restored it.   A special thanks goes out to Charlie Lau (FTM 2, 1961–1965) for setting up this opportunity.  We will also visit their neighbor, an LCT, and one of the last decommissioned Electric Submarines, the Blueback, featured in the “Hunt for Red October”.  Details on these events will be made available shortly.

When we selected Portland for our West Coast reunion, none of us were aware of the Oregon and Portland Laws that are in place.  They made this a real challenge for Andy.  He probably will hold a special session at the reunion on how to negotiate with a hotel and bend but not break any laws.

When the formal agenda and the rates for the Reunion have been established, we will publish then on the Web Site, on Facebook, and will use snail mail and e-mail to get the word to as many Coontz Sailors as we can find.  If you have kept in touch with other Coontz sailors, please pass this on to them and encourage them to come to this reunion.  And, please hold the dates for yourself also.

Portland will be Exciting, so plan to join us.
